Puppy Training Tips on Train Your Dog Month

Insider Tips on Train Your Dog Month!

National Train Your Dog month was established by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers to encourage socialization and schooling for dogs to become well-behaved companions. From new puppies to older dogs, properly trained canines make for happier, calmer pet owners.

Begin at the Beginning

When it comes to training your dog, basic commands are a good starting point. Lay down, sit, stay, come, drop it, and heel are all good ground-floor learnings. Positivity works with canines. Yelling and anger will trigger pets to become confused and skittish. Instead, use positive reinforcement with praise, petting, and treats to reward good behavior. Dogs convey body language, just like you do! Pay attention to signs of discomfort or frustration while training. Reward small steps, and don’t insist on perfection. Follow training time with play time. This can become a canine cue that fun is on the horizon.

Don’t overdo it. Dogs live in the moment, so keep sessions to five minutes or less as you start. Rewarding immediately helps the dog make the connection between its response and its behavior.

Be consistent and ask other family members or guests to be consistent, too. For example, if it’s not okay to be on the furniture one day, then the next it is, a dog can end up confused.

Tomorrow is always another day, so don’t give up. Even small increments of improvement represent a step forward.

The Fun of a Well-Trained Dog

Not only can a pet parent enjoy a well-trained dog, but the dogs like to behave well, too! Getting applause and praise for a trick feels good to a canine. Obedient dogs have a life where they can visit and travel with ease. Tricks don’t have to be elaborate. Simply teaching a pup to shake or roll over on command is a crowd-pleaser.

To help with trainability turn to Intelligent Omega™ from salmon—a popular formula from Terry Naturally® Animal Health. This unique form of omega-3s delivers DHA and EPA, which are important ingredients for supporting a dog’s brain health! Plus, it comes in an easy, tasty chew that dogs love.

Intelligent Omega supports normal canine function, including behavior patterns, training programs, healthy brain activity, memory recall, and normal balanced behavior. Want to send a pup to the head of the training class? Intelligent Omega is the smart choice!
